Springs
A snapped torsion spring is one of the most common “door won't open” emergencies. Homeowners describe a loud bang, a visible gap in the metal coil above the door, cables going slack, and a door that suddenly feels extremely heavy.
Look (from a safe distance) for a gap in the big spring above the door, a coil that looks split, or cables hanging loose. Other signs: opener struggles, door only opens a few inches, or you can't lift the door normally by hand.
That combination is classic. Unplug or stop using the opener so it doesn't fight a dead spring. Do not try to drive out under a half-secured door.
Yes — springs store enormous energy. DIY winding is a leading cause of injury. Leave spring work to trained technicians who replace springs in matched pairs when needed and rebalance the door.
Usually you should not. A broken spring can leave the door unsafe to lift and can damage the opener if you keep trying. If your car is trapped, call for emergency service rather than forcing the door.
